The Premier’s Community Volunteering Awards are to promote and celebrate the range and diversity of volunteering activities in Victoria, including volunteering through community organisations as well as community participation in less formal settings. They recognise the wide range of community and personal benefits of volunteering and community participation. They also recognise and celebrate innovation and good practice in a changing volunteering and community participation environment, and provide examples of innovation and good practice to the wider community and not-for-profit sector.

Nominations are open in the following categories:

Community Volunteering Achievement Award
Community Volunteering New Technology Award
Community Volunteering Leadership Award
Young People’s Community Participation Award

An award of a $5,000 cash prize will be presented in each category for both Metropolitan and Regional nominations.

General Information:
  1. The awards are open to all not-for-profit groups and organisations which offer opportunities for people to become involved in their community through volunteering, as well as individuals who provide leadership in volunteering groups and organisations.

  2. Nominations can be made by individuals, groups, community organisations, local government and local business organisations.

  3. Nominees may be put forward for more than one category if appropriate.

  4. A separate summary of 100 words outlining the achievements of the nominee which illustrate the relevant award category guidelines.

  5. Up to 1,000 words discussing the nomination in detail and addressing all the relevant award category guidelines.

  6. Any relevant supporting material (i.e. certificates of achievement/appreciation, letters of endorsement/thanks,) as well as 2-4 different photographs of the group or individual in action.

  7. Names of three (3) referees agreed by the nominee.

  8. A full unbound copy of the entire nomination submitted (if posted).

  9. The nomination material, including 100 word summary and all supporting material must not exceed a total of 40 pages.

  10. All hard copies of nomination information and supporting material will remain the property of the Victorian Government and will not be returned.

  11. Entrants agree to any media publicity and promotion associated with the Awards as requested by the Department of Planning and Community Development, or the awards coordinator.

  12. It is entrants’ responsibility to ensure that individuals represented in the photos submitted understand that the images may be used for purposes of promotion or presentation as part of the Awards.

Prizes:
  • All Winners will receive a $5,000 cash prize to support the on-going development of volunteering and community participation activities through their group or organisation.

  • All Nominees will receive a letter of congratulations from the Premier, and a recognition item.

  • All Finalists will receive a finalist recognition certificate and a framed recognition poster for their place of volunteering plus a $500 cash prize for the use of their group or organistation.

Judging:
  • Five finalists will be chosen in each category. A winner will be chosen for each category but will not be known until announced at the Awards Gala Presentation.

  • Judging will take place in April 2010.

  • The decisions of the judging panel are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Categories open for nomination

Community Volunteering Achievement Award
This award will celebrate and acknowledge not-for-profit groups and organisations in Victoria that are making a significant and sustained contribution to the development of their community through volunteering.

Community Volunteering New Technology Award
This award will celebrate and acknowledge not-for-profit community groups and organisations in Victoria that, are using new information and communications technology to create new opportunities for people to get involved in their community through volunteering.

Community Volunteering Leadership Award
This award recognises outstanding individual volunteer leaders or managers at the forefront of change in community not-for-profit groups and organisations across Victoria. They are people providing leadership by encouraging adaptability, creativity and innovation in response to changing needs in the community.


Young People’s Community Participation Award
This award recognises groups or activities which involve young people in leading, planning and making their own decisions. It celebrates the fact that young people are a fantastic source of energy, ideas, skills and innovation in a community. There are many examples of ways young people are involved in their communities, including developing and running community events; creating ways to develop stronger relationships between young people and the broader community; building skills and leadership amongst young people; and contributing to community strength and well-being.
In this award category priority will be given to activities that show young people working together and making a difference in their community.
